Cow Puja

Cows are traditionally considered sacred for their immense healing powers. Pure fresh cow's milk being low fat and highly nutritious, it is considered the best food for children, yogis and spiritual aspirants. Go-maya is well known as a tranquiliser and administered during initiation of spiritual students. Cowdung paste is applied on floors for its antiseptic properties and decorated with rice flour. Ghee extracted from cow's milk is low in cholesterol and used in Ayurvedic herbal medicines. Even the mere presence of cow in our midst is considered the sign of health, wealth and happiness. Small wonder then, that Govupuja, cow worship is a spiritual practice of yore. With the rapid rise in city life, cows have become scarce, more so the Desi varieties, maintained on natural non-chemical food and fodder. We have a Goshala with cows which are bathed and anointed, and worshipped every Friday. Their milk is offered to the Lord every morning and evening, during Suprabatham and Sayanam services.
